MOSAIC service specifications

This processor generate multiple single band and overview assets from a selection of Auxiliary datasets to be used for visualization and processing.

⚠ MOSAIC does not require in input a catalog reference from an auxilary data collection. The harvesting of source auxiliary data in its native format is handled by the service.

Service Description

The Auxiliary Dataset Mosaicking (MOSAIC) processor generates multiple auxiliary datasets to be made available for visualization and processing in the geobrowser. Auxiliary data in its original format are gathered from the source, either external or from a local repository, pre-processed to convert it in the format needed by the processing services (STAC+COG) and offered as Result as the other on-demand processin services. Their reformatting in STAC+COG also enables visualisation via the platform tiler (i.e. the layer styling function).

The MOSAIC service offers the below auxiliary datasets gathered from multiple sources:

  • ESA Global Land Cover 20201,

  • Copernicus DEM1,

  • World Settlement Footprint 20193,

  • WorldPop Population Counts 20204,

  • Global Surface Water 1984-2020 5,6 (Transitions, Change, Seasonality, Recurrence, Extent, Occurrence).

Note

To generate all the possible Auxiliary datasets over the same AOI you need to employ the MOSAIC service once for each selectable layer.

The user must select the Auxiliary dataset and define an AOI. The polygon is then used to select all the intersecting tiles of the original auxiliary dataset. Finally a mosaic of all the tiles is made and the single band is offered to the user, when possible together with an overview asset, in COG format.

Input

The MOSAIC service requires just few parameters to perform the mosaicking of the desired auxiliary dataset. The harvesting of source auxiliary data in its native format is handled by the service and thus the user does not have to specify a catalog reference from an auxilary data collection.

Parameters

The MOSAIC service requires 2 mandatory parameters which are described in Table 1.

Parameter Description Required Default value
Area of interest Area of interest expressed in WKT YES
Layer to processs Flag to select the auxiliary dataset to be created. Options are: ESA World Cover, Copernicus DEM, DLR World Settlment Footprint, World Population, JRC Global Surface Water - Change, JRC Global Surface Water - Extent, JRC Global Surface Water - Occurrence, JRC Global Surface Water - Recurrence, JRC Global Surface Water - Seasonality, JRC Global Surface Water - Transitions YES ESA World Cover

Output

The result products of the MOSAIC service is a single band and a multi-band assets in COG format generated for the selected auxiliary dataset.

  1. When ESA World Cover option is selected as Layer to process, the MOSAIC service generates the worldcover asset which is given as a single band 8-bit unsigned integer raster in COG format (pixel size of 0.0001 deg) The service also offers an overview asset as RGBA in COG format made by using the original color palette defined by the data provider.

  2. When Copernicus DEM option is selected as Layer to process, the MOSAIC service generates the cop-dem asset which is given as a single band Float32 raster in COG format. Pixel size of 0.0003 deg. Pixel values represent elevation in meters. The service also offers an overview asset as RGBA in COG format made by using a classical elevation color palette.

  3. When DLR World Settlment Footprint option is selected as Layer to process, the MOSAIC service generates the wsf2019 asset which is given as a single band 8-bit unsigned integer raster in COG format (pixel size of 0.0001 deg). In this single band asset the pixel value of 0 represents No Data while the value of 255 represent the true value. No overview asset is offered.

  4. When World Population option is selected as Layer to process, the MOSAIC service generates the world-pop asset which is given as single band Float32 raster in COG format (pixel size of 0.0008 deg). In this single band asset the pixel values represent population counts over a 100x100m square pixel area. Value of -99999 represents No Data. No overview asset is offered.

  5. When JRC Global Surface Water - Change (or Extent, Occurrence, Recurrence, Seasonality, Transitions) option is selected as Layer to process, the MOSAIC service generates the gsw-change (or gsw-extent, gsw-occurrence, gsw-recurrence, gsw-seasonality, gsw-transitions) asset which is given as a single band 8-bit unsigned integer raster in COG format. Pixel size of 0.00025 deg. For each single band asset is also offered an overview asset as RGBA in COG format made by using the original color palette defined by the data provider.
